The light helps to treat the process of bilirubin decomposition. Often, a newborn's liver has a reduced capacity to eliminate toxicity. Normally, treatment is necessary to reduce bilirubin when jaundice occurs in the newborn during the first day of life.

Phototherapy has been shown to be a reliable method in the treatment of elevated bilirubin levels. Through a photochemical reaction, the light converts the bilirubin into its water-soluble state.

This transformation allows its expulsion through the gallbladder and kidneys.

The blue part of the light spectrum, with a maximum absorption level of 460 nm, is particularly effective in the disintegration of bilirubin. Dräger's "blue light" fluorescent lamps emit rays exactly in this range and are therefore perfectly suitable for treatment.
